Description

Modularis is a dual 16-step sequencer with built-in synthesis from 2MGT (Metamusic Generative Tools), designed around the workflow of classic analog step sequencers. Each sequencer lane includes its own high-pass filter, low-pass filter, glide, and detune controls, allowing two independent melodic or rhythmic patterns to run simultaneously.

The built-in synthesizer engine lets you shape sounds directly without needing additional instruments. Within minutes of experimenting, it can produce retro-sounding arpeggios layered over detuned, atmospheric pads — a combination that lends itself naturally to ambient and Berlin School electronic music.

Beyond its internal sound engine, Modularis can route sequences to external software synthesizers via virtual MIDI cables. This turns it into a programmable pattern generator that drives any compatible instrument, greatly expanding its sonic range beyond the built-in timbres.

A dual-layer random seed pad arpeggiator adds generative capabilities, creating evolving patterns that shift with each trigger. Velocity, intensity, and offset controls provide rhythmic fine-tuning for adding swing and groove to sequences.

Modularis also includes a built-in recording module for capturing ideas on the fly. It runs as a standalone application on Windows XP through Windows 11 with no installation required, and a 32-bit VST2 version is available for use inside DAWs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Modularis control other synthesizer plugins in my DAW?

Yes, Modularis can route its sequences to other virtual instruments via MIDI output. You will need virtual MIDI cable software (such as loopMIDI) to connect Modularis to your target synthesizer, which lets you use its step sequencer to drive any MIDI-compatible plugin.

How do I use Modularis in a 64-bit DAW?

Modularis is only available as a 32-bit VST2 plugin. To run it inside a 64-bit host, you can use a bridging tool like JBridge that wraps the 32-bit plugin for 64-bit compatibility. Alternatively, the standalone version works independently of your DAW.

What is the difference between the free and donation versions?

The free version of Modularis has some feature limitations compared to the full donation-supported release. Supporting the developer through a donation unlocks the complete feature set. Both versions are available for download from the 2MGT website.

Does Modularis work as both a standalone application and a plugin?

Yes, Modularis is available in two formats. The standalone application requires no installation and runs directly on Windows XP through Windows 11. The VST2 plugin version can be loaded into any 32-bit compatible DAW for integration into your existing production workflow.
